Disability insurance provides valuable income protection in the event that you are unable to work due to an extended illness or injury. MAPFRE provides disability coverage through MetLife to all eligible employees who work at least 30 hours per week (after completion of 90 days of service).

Cost

MAPFRE pays the full cost of your short-term disability (STD) and long-term disability (LTD) coverage. As a result, any benefits you collect are considered taxable income.

If you wish, you can elect to pay the cost of the LTD plan on an after-tax basis. In this way, any benefit payments you receive from the LTD plan are not taxed. We recommend that you consult with your personal tax advisor before making an election.

Short-Term Disability (STD)

STD benefits begin after your claim is approved. STD payments begin the first day following the last day of a one-week waiting period.

Benefits equal 75% of your base salary. Once they begin, the benefits may continue for up to 12 weeks. The plan administrator has the final authority to approve or deny claims and to request additional medical documentation.

Note: An independent medical examination may be required to initiate or continue benefits.

Long-Term Disability (LTD)*

LTD benefits begin after a 90-day elimination period for a qualifying disability. The plan provides 60% of your monthly salary. The maximum benefit is $10,000 a month.

Benefits are offset by other income sources you may receive such as state disability, workers’ compensation, Social Security, retirement and severance benefits. You must notify MetLife if you begin receiving other income benefits.

Benefits for approved mental health and substance abuse disabilities are limited to 24 months.
